City of London: relocating Billingsgate, New Spitalfields and Smithfield markets

Find out more

During the Summer of 2018, after a competitive procurement process, Lambert Smith Hampton were instructed by the City of London Corporation (CoL) to advise on suitable sites in and around London with a view to a potential location consolidation of the existing and historic Billingsgate, New Spitalfields and Smithfield markets.

After a period of strategic advice, Lambert Smith Hampton launched a wide ranging site search, encompassing all opportunities up to 100 acres.

The resulting short list, of both open and off market  opportunities, were analysed with our Clients and, in the Autumn of 2018, CoL joined the competitive bidding process for the 42 acre site known as Barking Power Station. The power station, owned by Atco Power Generation and built in the 1990’s, was closed in 2014 with some demolition already underway.

The sale of the 42 acre site to CoL completed in December 2019. Strategic master planning is now underway together with internal business consultation.

This is the first stage of potentially a  development that will shape this area of East London over many coming years and is an exciting project for Lambert Smith Hampton.
