SITA puts major city centre site up for sale

The Montague Street site has become vacant following the opening of SITA’s new £7m 120,000 sq ft facility in nearby Landor Street earlier this year.

Located just half a mile east of the city centre, close to the Eastside Regeneration area and the Birmingham City Centre Enterprise Zone, the site is expected to appeal to developers or owner occupiers and could suit transport firms and storage companies. SITA appointed Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) to bring the property to market.

City centre site expected to generate widespread interest

Alex Carr, Director of Industrial & Logistics at LSH, said: “Having relocated to a new, larger facility this site is now surplus to SITA UK’s on-going requirements.

“It is in an excellent location and sites of this size so close to the city centre very rarely become available. It provides an exciting opportunity for commercial property developers to acquire the freehold of a large parcel of land with an enormous amount of potential.

“We expect there to be a great deal of interest from local companies but also from national firms looking for a foothold in the city.”

Montague Street is in an established industrial area and links with the A4540 Lawley Middleway, providing good access to the city centre and the national motorway network via junction six of the M6. The triangular site is bounded by the River Rea, the Grand Union Canal, Digbeth Branch canal and the main Birmingham New Street railway line.

New facilities will help SITA divert waste away from landfill

SITA UK Property Manager Trevor Armstrong said: “SITA UK is developing new facilities at nearby Landor Street including a Materials Recovery Centre as part of a strategy to divert waste away from landfill. This has resulted in our Montague Street depot being surplus to requirements and we anticipate strong interest from the market.”

SITA UK was established in 1988 and currently employs more than 5,500 people. It has a history of delivering environmentally responsible and innovative waste solutions. The recycling and resource management company delivers solutions to 12 million residents and 40,000 business customers throughout the UK, enabling customers to reduce their impact on the environment by using waste to create new products or generate energy, helping to conserve natural resources and reduce landfill. It operates in over 300 locations throughout the UK – from household waste recycling centres, transfer stations and landfills, to energy-from-waste, recycling, composting and secure shredding facilities.
